In the field of literary and interdisciplinary analysis, the representation of the relationship between the «Self» and the «Other» plays a crucial role in understanding the mechanisms of identity. By «Self» and «Other», we refer to the way each character redefines themselves in relation to the other through literary imagery, action, and language .This issue holds significance for writers, as the encounter with the Other reveals the process of identity formation within a narrative framework.
Adopting an integrative approach, this study examines the reconfiguration of identity and subjectivity in the context of French culture. The theoretical foundation of this research is Paul Ricoeur’s concept of "narrative identity." According to this theory, identity is not a static state but a dynamic process forged through dialogue. It takes shape through interaction with the Other and the reinterpretation of experiences. Narrative and linguistic devices reveal the tension between the "Self" and the "Other," thereby allowing for the emergence of a fluid, multidimensional identity. The corpus for this study consists of the play Jafar Khan Returns from Europe by Hassan Moghadam. The textual analysis employs a narrative and structural approach. We aim to shed light on the representation of «Farang» (the West)—and its influence on the characters' identities—by examining narrative structures, symbolic imagery, and linguistic devices. Beyond analyzing the complexities of characterization and subjectivity, this method demonstrates how the encounter with the «Farang» as a cultural "Other" prompts reflection on the self, a re-evaluation of identity construction, and the development of intercultural narratives.
