English

Assia Djebar’s L’Amour, la fantasia is one of the most significant works of Francophone and postcolonial North African literature, challenging the conventional boundaries of narrative, identity and language. This article analyses the representation of plural identity and the crisis of language in the novel, examining how fragmented narration and multilayered writing shape a feminine and polyphonic voice. The study is qualitative and text-based: it applies Benveniste’s distinction between récit and discours, Genette’s narrative levels and temporal order, and Lejeune’s autobiographical pact not as autonomous objects of theoretical inquiry, but as descriptive instruments brought to bear on the text. Through samples drawn from the historical, autobiographical and oral-testimony sections, it is shown that the coexistence of these three layers blurs the boundary between récit and discours. The pronoun “je” has a fluid presence and performs at once the roles of narrator, witness and collector of narratives. The article further shows that the delegation of “je” to the women storytellers in “Les voix ensevelies” produces a metadiegetic level that transforms the position of the narrating instance and the distribution of voice within historical narrative, and that traces of Arabic orality in their speech are the linguistic mark of that shift. Fragmented narration and enunciative heterogeneity thus prove effective instruments for representing fractured identities and voices that found no expression in the official narrative of history.
