This study investigates the representation of communicative competence and speech events in Their Children After Them, a novel by the contemporary French author Nicolas Mathieu, using Dell Hymes’s sociolinguistic model. By emphasizing the interplay among language, social context, and power relations, this model allows for a more nuanced analysis of the language of fictional characters. The central research question examines how the characters’ communicative competence is represented through speech events and the components of Hymes’s eight-part discourse model, and how this representation relates to the reproduction of power structures and class identity. The study adopts a qualitative, descriptive-analytical method; linguistic data were drawn from the characters’ dialogues in the novel and analyzed according to Hymes’s eight components. The findings demonstrate that the social context of the Lorraine region, portrayed as a declining industrial area, plays a crucial role in shaping the characters’ linguistic interactions. Class and generational differences are clearly evident in patterns of conversational participation, communicative goals, and speech patterns. Furthermore, the analysis of tone, linguistic instruments, and norms of interaction reveals that language in this novel serves not only as a means of communication but also as a tool for representing linguistic-class tensions and reproducing power relations. this paper
