Michel Houellebecq is one of the prominent and controversial contemporary French writers who, with a unique style and a specific language, presents the reader with a world of emotional emptiness, despair, and psychological collapse. Language in his works is not only a tool for narration, but also a reflection of the psychological state of the author and his characters—a language that, with its repetitive structures, lack of dynamics, and cold or neutral vocabulary, represents a kind of modern melancholy; a tone that can be described as »depressed«. This article, with an inter-stylistic and psychological approach, examines the reflection of depression in the linguistic structures of Houellebecq’s works and shows how features such as repetition, monotony, and the elimination of narrative passion shape an existential experience of sadness, loneliness, and stillness. The study also addresses the difficulties of translating this particular tone into other languages, highlighting challenges such as conveying psychological indifference, maintaining a tired rhythm, and recreating semantic silence. The main claim of the article is that the translation of such texts cannot be achieved solely through lexical fidelity, but requires a deep understanding of the psychological, cultural, and stylistic dimensions of the text. Finally, the article emphasizes the need to adopt an interdisciplinary framework in the study of literary translation; an approach that considers the intersection of linguistics, psychoanalysis, and literary criticism as a fundamental condition for understanding and recreating such complex works.
